53% of your school’s parents are on facebook

This probably comes as a surprise to some but it’s clear that school parents are very connected. This is just one of the revealing statistics from a recently completed survey conducted with parents across many of the sponsor-ed schools. The use of social networking applications by parents, in fact Mums in particular, is further supported by Telstra's State of the Nation Report, showing that mums are increasingly using social networking to stay in touch with family; 61% saying they use it regularly with 47% using it daily more….

Why kids write so well - thank the web

I approach this article with a great deal of trepidation. I’m going to explain why kids write so well and I’m pitching this article to teachers – a very bold move indeed. I also need to mention that my wife’s a primary school teacher and is hanging (note I didn’t drop the ‘g’) off every word. So with the courage of a first time bungy jumper here I go - deep breath now.

‘Why kids write so well’ by Denis Masseni and with some support from Professor Geoffrey Blainey – sorry but I had to bring in a heavy hitter. more...

It's been under our noses the whole time!

Since the launch of sponsor-ed over 18 months ago, we have always touted the homepage main publishing frame for the principal's message to reside in.  However we have since learned that the main publishing frame can be reserved for an even more school-centric feature, the student's work!  From what we have learned from Google Analytics and from speaking to many schools, student’s work is one of the most popular things to put on the school website.

It gives the parents, particularly the ones who are not able to attend all the school's events a chance to see and read the students work.  Interstate and overseas family members can also access the site and feel a bit more connected to what's happening in their grandchild's, niece or nephew's school life.

The homepage strategy... You're the voice!

We have found there is a always a significant increase in pageviews when there is an announcement in assembly about the importance of making the school's website each family's homepage.  It becomes a doubly strong message when the announcement is followed by an article in the newsletter too.  To help get this message out there into the school community, we have written a blurb you may like to read or release to encourage people to click the orange Homepage button!

How parents connect to the net

In September this year we invited all of our schools to participate in an online parent survey.  For the schools that accepted the invite, we accessed their websites and uploaded a survey-ed icon that when clicked took the viewer to a survey for parents to complete. The survey ran for 3 weeks and schools were asked to help publicise the survey in their assembly and newsletter to help it get the best possible response.
